Tea

Well, after spending one half an hour looking for a parking spot and then walking toward what we determined was the crowd gathered at one end of the park, we were surprised to find ourselves at an outdoor bar and grill. The only demonstration had been at the entrance to the parking lot where a group of about 100 people were carrying protest posters. One bubbly old lady thanked my kids for paying her bills which amused them. But that was it.

We enjoyed a nice walk along the Sarasota waterfront in absolutely perfect Florida winter weather and consoled ourselves with a take-out lunch from the nearby Whole Foods Market.

I was there merely as an observer. I'm inclined to think some sort of bailout may be necessary at this point, but certainly not the free-for-all currently being legislated. I'd prefer Americans just toughen up and ride out the storm. This from someone who admittedly feels no economic pinch. Yet. I think a free market is really our best option and have the sneaking suspicion we may be selling our children into slavery.

I'm still waiting for someone to ask Mildred Kalish (of "Little Heathens") her thoughts on the current economic situation.

I keep thinking that maybe I have a mean-spirited, warped view of this all because I grew up in a rent-controlled apartment and never considered living in a house or having a mortgage, let alone feeling entitled to more house than one needs. Gah.; March 1, 2009 at 3:04 PM

SCHOLA 101

schol' a: 1) An intermission of work, leisure for learning, learned conversation, debate, disputation, lecture, dissertation. 2) A meeting place for teachers and pupils, place for instruction, place of learning, school. 3) The disciples of a teacher, body of followers, school, sect. 4) An acronym for my tortuous blog title "Secular Classical Homeschoolers' Odyssean Learning Adventure." 5) How my Boston cousins pronounce "scholar." 6) Someone who studies at 10 o'clock for a dilla or a dolla.

These are the blatherings of an introverted, autodidactic, champion of The Enlightenment raising three daughters. At one time or another we have homeschooled, public-schooled, Catholic-schooled, cyber-schooled, unschooled, and even threatened boarding school. We have been inspired variously by The Well-Trained Mind, A Thomas Jefferson Education, and Climbing Parnassus, tempered by the writings and wisdom of Charlotte Mason, John Holt, Benjamin Franklin and Michel de Montaigne.

I try not to get wrapped up in labels, but we are secular and we are classical-ish.

We travel. A lot. Sometimes to the other side of the state and sometimes to the other side of the planet. Join us on our journey as we search for our home, navigate the waters of self-education, lounge with the lotus-eaters, and bash a Cyclops or two.
