Gravity

How did my great-great-grandfather, the last of many generations born on the family's Virginia tobacco plantation and later raised in staunchly southern Baltimore after the early death of his father, end up a Union naval officer in the Civil War?

How did that apple fall so far from the tree?

How did I, born to Republican Catholic FOX News-watching football-obsessed parents, end up a bleeding-heart liberal freethinking NPR-listening bookworm?

My apple was drop-kicked.

Maybe I have you confused with another blogger, but weren't you more of a Libertarian a couple years ago? I sort of remember you complaining about federal dollars spent on Sesame Street? Who knows, most likely I'm just having a senior moment. Anyway, I've really enjoyed your blog.

LOL.. I ask myself that same question ALL THE TIME. My family = conservative, religious, southern redneck. Me= totally the opposite of ALL of that ;)

Nice to meet you, thanks for stopping by 'Stuff' :D

No, Elaine, that was me. I still prefer Public Radio be public and supported by members and I think arts, charities, and sports should also be self-supporting. The annoying hysterical emails begging for support set me off on that tangent because I strongly suspected the people wanting me to sign various petitions were likely not supporting their own local stations -- I know because I went back and reread it -- MY senior moment : )

The quote (often attributed to Thomas Jefferson), that "Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have..." is true enough, but there are certain things, health, public safety, infrastructure, and protecting our inalienable rights (which should include the right to choose and same-sex marriage) that all citizens are entitled to. I'd like to see more free-market options but worry about corporatization.

Not sure what that makes me (other than someone who changes her mind a lot.)

Thanks for the kind words, Elaine and Stuff.
