Anyone else annoyed by school reports due in Power Point format instead of say, writing? Just because we have the technology must we use it? Is this education or job training? Isn't this just another example of dumbing down?
Maybe I'm just tired of being forced to share my laptop.

Only in Powerpoint? Bad idea. I'd be just fine with a writing assignment distilled down to a PP presentation. (The assignment would be doing both)
It is used in business -- I hate it but work I on 3 or 4 presentations a week. Nothing is worse than sitting in a meeting with someone reading directly from the presentation.
